Montana Department of Transportation new Director: Mack Long 10:15-11:15

One of the popular sessions at the MCA Convention is always the Update from the MDT Director – and this year will be your chance to meet Malcolm “Mack” Long. Long brings 25 years of experience in professional construction operations and management to the position, serving as president of the JTL Group – a construction company started by his grandfather in Billings. After his retirement from JTL, Long served as owner of an oil field service business in Montana and Wyoming. With a breadth of experience in the construction industry, Long has worked on airport reconstruction, highways, utilities work, and major industrial plant construction. His father, Joel Long, was president of the MCA in 2000. “As a contractor, his appointment will be a great segue to stronger partnering between contractors and MDT,” said 2020 MCA president Bob Warren. “The Montana Contractors Association is looking forward to solidifying our relationship with MDT. Having a leader who understands the nuances of running a contracting business will mean that everyone succeeds.”

This presentation focuses on suicide within our culture with specific attention towards Montana and the construction community. The presentation covers national and Montana data, demographics of a suicidal person, warning signs, risk assessment, training on how to intervene with a suicidal person, evidenced-based practices, and resources available.

Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse: Jo McGuire 10:15-12:15

With voter-approved legalized recreational marijuana now part of the employment environment, you need to know how to identify and deal with suspected use. Supervisors or managers that directly over-see employees subject to mandatory federal testing guidelines for U.S.D.O.T. safety-sensitive duties must have 2 hours of training on the ostensible signs and symptoms of substance use. Training must be completed on a regular basis and include how to properly approach and document the actions of an employee who should be tested for circumstances pertaining to reasonable suspicion. Whether you supervise U.S.D.O.T. certified employees or not, this 2-hour workshop will educate you on how to have a safe, drug-free workplace.
