So what should new work zone signs say?

An recent email generated by the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) might have left MCA members a bit confused about some specifics of the new work zone signage law - notably, what those signs should say.

Here's what MDT's Jim Wingerter, said when asked by the MCA for clarification: "The new sign will say, "Fines double when workers present."'

Now that we have that cleared up, remember the new signing requirements will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018. For projects that were awarded prior to the effective date and not substantially complete, the following apply:

Force account compensation for the manufacturing of two signs designating "fines double in the work zone when workers are present."

If the contractor can demonstrate that this change has resulted in a significant change in the character of the work, MDT would consider an equitable adjustment. Please refer to section 109.03 - Compensation of Altered Quantities and section 104.02.3 Significant Changes in the Character of the Work.
